Here is a little music for your Friday enjoyment. You maybe feeling a little tension, but here is a little Son Volt to work you over. It is off the new album, The Search. Enjoy!
As I was traveling through northern Indiana last night, I noticed something rather different. There was an over abundance of Christian Radio stations. I scrolled thought the channels and counted 9 different station. That was over the 19 total available channels (counting the Spanish speaking that I did not know if they were religious or not). That seems like a lot to me. I scrolled through again to get a sense of content and most of them where talk. Only one was music (at that time). I heard about how Christ can help your finances (Crown Ministries), change your life, solve your sexual sins, how the Bible is not a "self-help" book, and how God can guide your life path. As I was listening to all these different messages, I quickly realized how people can be confused by people who call themselves "Christians". Last night, I could have found a radio station to suit whatever I believe and no context for a belief system. On one hand, I could belief God only cares about my happiness and wants me to do whatever makes me happy (from the songs on the music station). If I flip to the other station, I could listen to a hell, fire, and brim stone sermon.
I still have not been able to account for the volume of Christian radio in that area. Maybe they need more Jesus there because of the cold, snowy winters. I guess you can do a lot of mental and physical damage to your belief structure when one has to be inside so much.
This song is the running soundtrack in my head. It is from the Dixie Chicks album they released last year. I am not normal a big country fan but this album is very good.
This is a band (of brothers) from Boston. They have a cool sound and write sounds about books. Can you beat that? Also check out the video below from their myspace page.
________
Pauland Joe a re brothers. They started this band in the summer of 2002. The legendary tale of their origin goes like this:Joe
was planning to have a rock show in the shed in the backyard. People had
been invited. But then all the bands cancelled. So that morning, the time was finally appropriate to bust out an idea that had been incubating in Paul's head for some time: Harry and the Potters. That morning, over the course of an hour, Paul and Joe wrote 7 songs. Then, they went out to the shed and practiced them for half an hour. And then, later in the day, they performed them for about 6 people. It was awesome. The place went
nuts. Nowadays, they don't just play in sheds, they also play in libraries, bookstores, basements, art galleries, theatres, hot dog jamorees (true story!), and living rooms.
A byproduct of my sleepless night, I discover this band last night. They were playing on David Letterman, so I checked out their album on Itunes. It rocks! Their music has a nice alternative, folk sound. Well worth a listen too!
